Evening at the Beach

One of the advantages of living near the beach is our access to it whenever we want without little or no advance preparation.  However, we have been so stinkin’ busy this summer, we have not been to the beach.  I can’t believe it.

So, Captain Daddy called home around 4:00 p.m. yesterday and asked, “Do you want to go to the beach?”  Now it is easy to make excuses not to go, but we love the beach so much.  I quickly said, “Yes” and added that there was food for Big Tuna to fix for himself for supper.  Captain  Daddy said, “No, his presence is required.”  We formulated our plan for supper and began gettin’ ready.  It took just a few seconds for The Queen, The Princess, and Godzilla to change into bathing suits and gather their needed necessities.  Big Tuna grudgingly agreed to go with us.

A little while latter we were loaded up and heading toward the beach.

My handsome Big Tuna trying not to acknowledge that I’m pointing the camera at him.

My Godzilla getting my attention so I will point the camera at him.

The Queen really trying to smile, with the sun and wind in her face.

The Princess enjoying the ride.

My handsome, Captain Daddy, at the helm.

We went to an isolated island, in the early evening.  There were a few people, but we pretty much had the beach to ourselves.  Just the way we like it.

Sand castle (?) building.

It was a really enjoyable time for us to re-connect as a family.  The sand, salt, and sea always rejuvenates my soul.  I appreciate times like these with my family.  I know they will occur less often, but I will always say “yes” whenever the opportunity arises so we can create another family memory.

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 40

Today is our last day of prayer.  Today, thank the Lord for the past 40 days of prayer for orphans.  Ask Him to bring more prayer warriors into the battle.  Ask Him to help you to continue to praying diligently.  Ask Him to continue to give you His love for the orphans.  Ask Him to continue to challenge the hearts of your congregation that

“He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will reward him for what he has done.” Proverbs 19:17

Chinapalooza 2010 – The Main Event

So, Saturday night we were all to gather at the home of one of the families for dinner.  We have been to this family’s house before and they always have the best parties!

The theme for the gathering was “carnival fun.”  So much to do!  First there was a bouncy “carousel.”

DSCN4266 It didn’t take the girls long to don their shoes and hop right on in!

DSCN4259Next was a table with jars of candy.  Everyone was to guess at how many candies were in each jar.  Also, a small suitcase was available to drop off our items for a time capsule.  Of course, we forgot our items and still need to mail them to be included.

DSCN4261I don’t have many photos, as Big Tuna was the designated photographer.  However, no detail was too small!  Goody bags with all sorts of fun and special items.  Photos of our girls.

DSCN4260 Yummy, yummy appetizers.  Vintage sodas such as “Bubble Up” in glass bottles.  Does anyone else remember those?  All sorts of fun things for the kids to do, such as a magician, and face painting.

or arm painting.

Finally, the group photos of the girls.4782380835_2c0bc05634

All too soon the evening came to an end.  What a wonderful reunion.

Oh, by the way, you may be wondering the outcome of the candy guessing contest.  The Queen won the lemon drops; Big Tuna won the gumballs; and The Princess won the lollipops and the red licorice strips.  Yes, the beach crew won ALL of the candy.  But we did share…and still are!

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 39

Today, pray for the health of orphans around the world.  Ask the Lord to provide medications and treatment for the simple things that are unnecessarily killing children like unclean drinking water, malaria, dysentery, AIDS, and malnutrition.

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 38

Today, pray for street children.  These children live under bushes, in dumps, and in sewage pipes.  They eat meals out of trash cans.  Many people walk past them without seeing them or view them as pests.  Ask God to open the eyes of the church to help see the orphans all around them.  Ask the Lord to provide food and shelter for the street children.

Chinapalooza 2010 – Preparations

As I have written, our adoption travel group holds a get together/reunion each year on about our “Gotcha Day” anniversary.  This year marks 5 years that we have had our daughters that we adopted in 2005.  Because 5 years is a kind of a milestone, well to me anyway because I want it to be, I wanted to do something special for the girls.

I wrote to one of the moms back in March, and asked if she thought the rag dolls I make would be ok to give to the girls.  She thought it was a good idea.

So, I sort of committed to making the dolls.  I had to mentally work out all of the details.  I wanted a special fabric, I wanted to make the dolls special.  But it was right in the middle of schooling.  It was March and July was a long ways off….

So I spent the next three months ”processing” my idea.  Meaning I hadn’t done the first stitch towards making the dolls!  I finally got my “thoughts” together about a week before we left for Chicago.  I had 14 dolls to make.  Actually I had 18 to make, but 4 of the girls were not going to be at the reunion, so I will finish them before school starts…I hope.

So anyway, I began making the dolls in an assembly line fashion.  I tweaked my pattern so that each doll’s hair would be like the way each girl wears their hair, parted on the right, parted on the left, and bangs.  I wanted each doll to be be different yet have something in common.  The fabric I used for the bodies was the same design, but in the each girl’s favorite color.  All of the skirts were the same fabric.  Then I added a tag to each doll that reads “sisters” in Chinese calligraphy.

I sewed up until the last minute before we left.  I actually had to hand finish the skirts on the way to Chicago.  It was my plan to give the girls the dolls on Saturday night when all of the families would get together.

I had been so busy trying to finish the dolls that I hadn’t had a chance to take a picture of them.  Here they all are.  Not a good photo, but it has all 14 of them.

Here is the “sisters” tag.

Now to get ready for the fun night ahead!

More Chinapalooza to come…………

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 37

Chinapalooza 2010 – Day 3

Sorry it is taking so long to post about Chinapalooza.  We have VBS this week and it had been busy!

Ok, where was I?

On Saturday morning we headed out early to visit Chinatown.  We wanted to get an early start to avoid the heat, but mostly to shop!  We started off with a water taxi ride to China town.

I don’t know why Captain Daddy always tells them to lift their arms up?

After landing and navigating our way through the neighborhood, we found the main gate for Chinatown.

My friend had given me the names of the stores she likes to shop at.  We bought new qipao’s for the girls at Giftland.

Our next stop was a grocery store to look for the Princess’ favorite snack from China.  The store was pretty authentic of a shop in China.  When entering the store The Queen said, “Oh, a pet store!”  Yes, there were tanks of swimming creatures as well as many dried varieties.

We found the snacks!

My Tiger child.

My Rooster girl.

My two Monkeys.

We caught the water taxi back and rested up for the “big” event later in the afternoon.

More Chinapalooza to come…..

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 36

Today, ask the Lord to release and speed any care supplies to refugee c amps where many orphans live and need even the most basic necessities.  Ask Him to cut through any governmental regulations or corrupt leaders to miraculously get the supplies delivered to where they are needed most.

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 35

Today, ask the Lord to encourage and strengthen your church.  Caring for orphans and changing attitudes and beliefs and actions is tough as the enemy is bound to attack.  Ask for protection for your pastor, his family, their health, and their ministry.  Ask for God’s hand of blessing on their lives.

Chinapalooza 2010 – Welcome!

As I wrote earlier, the official kick-off to Chinapalooza 2010 began with a dinner hosted by the Chicago families.  Where, you might ask?  None other than:

Oh Yeah!!!  Chicago-style deep dish pizza at the renown Gino’s East, that’s where!!!  The group had arranged for private room.  What a great time and a great feast!  Salad!  Appetizers!  Thin-crust pizza!  Deep-dish pizza! Cookies!  Oh my oh my.  I only wish I could have eaten more because it was G-O-O-D!

We first learned of Gino’s Pizza back in 2007 while watching the travel channel.  Then Godzilla’s favorite show “Man vs. Food” visited Gino’s in 2008.  We have been wanting to eat there ever since.

One of the traditions of this restaurant is that people from all over write and scribble all over the walls, and any other surface that is within reach.

Big Tuna managed to add to the decor’.

Big Tuna and The Princess.

We had a great time getting re-acquainted with the other families as well as stuffing ourselves.  Good thing we have a lot of walking to do tomorrow!

More fun to come!……………

Prayer for Orphan Care – Day 33

Today, ask the Lord to help your church be an example  of the Lord’s love for orphans as written in Psalm 10:17-18:

“The helpless put their trust in You.  You are the defender of orphans Lord.  You know the hopes of the helpless.  Surely You will listen to their cries and comfort them.  You will bring justice to orphans and the oppressed, so people can no longer terrify them.”

Chinapalooza 2010 – Day 2

The actual kick-off to the Chinapalooza was Friday evening.  We had the whole day to explore Chicago and the boys decided that they wanted to experience the Sky Ledge at the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower).  We walked to the Willis Tower and made our ascent up to the 103rd floor.  This floor serves as an observation deck and you can look out over the city and see for distances.  The real attraction are these glass box enclosures that project out of the building so you you can see straight down below your feet.

You can read more about it here.

View from inside the observation deck.

My Sanuks and looking down.

After the Sky Deck, we stopped by my nephew’s barber shop (Hammersmith Hair).  My nephew didn’t know we were in town and was quite surprised to see us.  We asked if he could give Big Tuna a “college makeover.”  My nephew was more than happy to oblige us and he gave Big Tuna a great new look!  Godzilla also wanted in on some of the action, so he worked on Godzilla too.

Big Tuna after!
